Blown Bitumen 105/15

Description of Blown Bitumen 105/15

Oxidized Bitumen grades are blown or oxidized bitumen ‘s which are produced by passing air through soft bitumen under controlled temperature conditions. This process gives the bitumen more rubbery properties than penetration or hard grade bitumen’s and a variety of uses in industrial applications.

Blown Bitumen 105/15 is produced by either Continuous or Staggered Blowing Process. Heated Penetration Grade Bitumen under controlled environment is blown with air which controls the Oil Content in the Bitumen while it oxidized. The different grades for suited applications produced are designated by two numbers to indicate the mid-points of their softening point and penetration ranges.

Blown Bitumen 105/15 is based on petroleum bitumen which is made by blowing bitumen 60/70 by very hot air.

As said before, Blown Bitumen 105/15 is based on petroleum bitumen which is made by blowing bitumen 60/70 by very hot air. In addition, the numbers relate to the midpoint of the material’s softening point and penetration respectively. The softening point value measured by Ring and Ball method as determined by ASTM D36. Also, the penetration value is in 1/10 mm as determined by IP49 or ASTM- D5.

Uses of Blown Bitumen 105/15

Blown Grade Bitumen is one of the most versatile products that enjoys widespread applicability due to its adhesive, sealing, and protective features among other industries. Heated at a temperature of 220-230°C, this gives it excellent viscosity and flow that makes the application perfect in different ways.

The wide application areas for Blown Bitumen are roofing, flooring, and pipeline coating in asphalt membranes for the protection of metal and concrete. Hard grades are particularly suitable for sealing joints and saw cuts that have the least movement; their wide temperature tolerance prevents bleeding with high heat and enhances durability and reliability.

Besides this variety of applications of Blown Bitumen 105/15 is used for making antislip layers, sound dampened felts for under carriage sealants for automotive and electric cable joints for construction industries, electrical, thus bonding the tiles together and cork plates and roofing felts and laminated boards, therefore offering excellent insulation and adhesion.

Other critical usages include carpet backing, protection against corrosion, acoustic panels, paints, varnishes, and lacquers production.

The material’s versatility extends to civil works, road construction, pavement crack sealing, and the insulation of buildings. It is also used as a raw material in isolation bitumen membrane sheets, dust-binding, and the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products.

Blown Bitumen 105/15 is applied in the preparation of asphalt-based paints for corrosion protection, linings for public works structures, adhesives in electrical laminates, and as a base for synthetic turf. The versatility of its application renders it a backbone in many industrial, construction, and infrastructural projects.

Storage and Handling

Heating of packaged bitumen is a very crucial process that must be carefully controlled with regard to safety and product quality. The maximum safe handling temperature is 230°C, beyond which there is a risk because of the poor heat conductivity of bitumen.

Breaking up blown bitumen before heating allows uniform heat distribution with the prevention of overheating locally, which would alter its properties, thermally crack the bitumen, and release highly flammable vapors. Avoid heating of cooled bitumen in boilers. There is risk of producing irregular heating and/or generating pressure pockets of vapor. Temperature indicating devices shall be provided at suitable locations. The actual readings can vary considerably from the true temperature close to the heat source. See appropriate MSDS for specific health and safety precautions.

Health & Safety

Workers should wear protective masks, gloves, and goggles during application. The asphalt can be removed from equipment and tools with kerosene or gasoline. Care should be taken when heating Blown Bitumen 105/15 to avoid over heating.
