Private factory grades tracked closely, maintaining a consistent discount of $5–10/MT below embossed grades across all months.
The first half of 2025 (January–June) was characterized by relative price stability, with Jey and Pasargad embossed grades trading in a narrow band of $385–400/MT. Jumbo Bag prices held at $365–385/MT during this period. VG grades (VG10, VG20, VG40) maintained a slight premium of $3–5/MT above private factory penetration grades throughout the year. Oxidized Bitumen 115/15 remained at elevated levels of $450–480/MT FOB during H1 2025, reflecting stronger demand from waterproofing and industrial applications.
The peak of 2025 prices was recorded in July–August, when Jey and Pasargad embossed grades reached $395–405/MT, supported by strong seasonal construction demand from road-building projects across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Bitumen export prices in 2024 followed a broadly sideways trend for the majority of the year, with a notable sharp spike in Q4 that briefly pushed prices to their highest levels since mid-2023. Jey and Pasargad embossed grades opened 2024 (February) at $350–360/MT FOB and closed December at $405–430/MT — a net increase driven almost entirely by the November surge rather than fundamental demand growth.
The first half of 2024 (February–June) was characterized by exceptional price stability. Jey and Pasargad embossed grades traded in a remarkably tight range of $350–365/MT across all four months, with almost no week-to-week movement. Private factory grades held at $345–360/MT, maintaining the consistent $5–10/MT discount to embossed brands. This extended period of stability reflected balanced supply and demand conditions, with Vacuum Bottom base prices moving very little on the Mercantile Exchange during this period. Singapore bulk prices however traded at a significant premium of $400–455/MT during H1, reflecting strong Southeast Asian infrastructure demand.
A gradual upward movement began in July–August 2024, with embossed grades edging up from $355–360/MT to $370–375/MT by August-end. This modest rise aligned with peak construction season demand from Africa and South Asia. The September–October period saw prices consolidate at $355–380/MT for embossed grades, with European bulk prices spiking sharply to $450–520/MT — the widest range recorded in 2024 — due to increased demand and tighter vessel availability in European markets.
The most significant price event of 2024 occurred in November, when Jey and Pasargad embossed grades surged sharply from $385/MT to $425–430/MT in weeks 3 and 4 — a jump of approximately $40–45/MT within a single month. This spike was driven by a sharp increase in Vacuum Bottom base prices on the Mercantile Exchange combined with a sudden increase in regional demand. Private factory grades followed, rising from $372/MT to $415–420/MT in the same period. Oxidized Bitumen 115/15 also peaked in November at $485–495/MT, its highest level recorded across all of 2024.
Overall, 2024 was a tale of two halves: an unusually stable and range-bound first three quarters, followed by a sharp late-year spike that reset the market to higher price levels heading into 2025. Bitumen export prices in 2023 recorded the most significant annual decline of any year in the 2022–2025 period, with Jey and Pasargad embossed grades falling from a high of $435–445/MT in April to $360–370/MT by December — a drop of approximately $70–80/MT over the course of the year. This sustained downtrend was primarily driven by falling Vacuum Bottom (VB) base prices, weakening global crude oil prices, and softening demand from key importing regions in H2 2023.
The year opened in January 2023 with embossed grades at $375–390/MT, already noticeably below the elevated levels of late 2022. Prices then staged a brief but sharp recovery in March–April, with Jey and Pasargad reaching $430–445/MT — the year’s peak. This short-lived rally was supported by a seasonal pickup in construction activity and a temporary increase in VB base prices on the Mercantile Exchange. Private factory grades tracked the same pattern, peaking at $420–435/MT in April before reversing.
From May 2023 onward, prices entered a sustained and almost uninterrupted decline that lasted through year-end. Embossed grades fell from $410–430/MT in May to $375–385/MT in June, then continued lower through July ($370–410/MT), August ($420–430/MT — a brief stabilization), and September ($415–430/MT). The sharpest single-month correction came in October–December, when prices dropped from $395–430/MT in October to $360–370/MT in December, as demand from road construction projects across Africa and South Asia slowed into the off-season and Vacuum Bottom prices fell sharply on the exchange.
Bulk Bitumen prices in 2023 showed particularly high volatility. FOB bulk prices swung from a high of $390–400/MT in May to a low of $265–275/MT in June — a collapse of over $120/MT in a single month — before partially recovering through Q3. This extreme spread reflected the significant impact of shipping logistics, vessel availability, and destination-market conditions on bulk pricing, which is far more sensitive to short-term supply-demand imbalances than packaged grades. Jumbo Bag prices also declined steadily through the year, closing December at $350–360/MT compared to a peak of $400–410/MT in April–May.

Bitumen export prices in 2022 recorded the highest levels of the entire 2022–2025 period, with Jey and Pasargad embossed grades reaching a peak of $520–540/MT in March–April — levels that have not been matched in any subsequent year. The year began with a strong upward rally driven by post-COVID infrastructure recovery demand, rising crude oil prices, and supply constraints, before entering a sustained correction in H2 that brought prices back to more normalized levels by year-end.
The year opened in January 2022 with embossed grades at $375–435/MT, already on a strong upward trajectory. Prices accelerated sharply through February and March, with Jey and Pasargad reaching $500–540/MT — the highest export prices recorded across the entire dataset. This extraordinary peak was driven by a combination of surging global crude oil prices following the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, strong infrastructure demand from developing markets, and tight supply conditions on the Mercantile Exchange. New Steel Drum prices also hit their dataset peak at $475–495/MT during this period.
A correction began in May 2022, with embossed grades easing from $500–510/MT to $455–475/MT, and continued through June ($435–465/MT) and July ($375–445/MT). The decline accelerated in August–September, as crude oil prices retreated globally and Vacuum Bottom base prices fell on the exchange. By September, embossed grades had dropped to $385–420/MT — still elevated by historical standards but significantly below the March–April peak. Bulk Bitumen prices showed the sharpest correction, falling from a high of $440–450/MT in February to $295–395/MT in August — a decline of over $100/MT.
Prices staged a partial recovery in October–November 2022, with embossed grades rising back to $415–450/MT on renewed seasonal demand and a temporary uptick in VB prices. However, the recovery proved short-lived, with December recording a pullback to $400–410/MT as year-end demand slowed. New Steel Drum prices followed the same pattern, recovering to $430–440/MT in November before easing to $380–395/MT in December.
Overall, 2022 was defined by an extraordinary first-half price spike — the highest in the dataset — followed by a significant but incomplete correction. The year’s effective trading range for standard embossed penetration grades was $375–540/MT FOB, the widest annual range of any year tracked on this page.
