Blown Bitumen 90/10
General Description of Blown Bitumen 90/10
Blown Bitumen 90/10 is an oxidized asphalt produced by oxidizing selected petroleum asphalts without a catalyst. It has a high softening point, high flash point, and is highly stable during melting, making it popular in the India and Uzbekistan market. This type of asphalt is produced by air-blowing penetration grade bitumen at high temperatures, resulting in a material with a higher penetration index.
RAHA Bitumen 90/10 is based on petroleum bitumen, which is made by blowing bitumen 60/70 by very hot air. The designation of Blown Bitumen 90/10 refers to the midpoint of the softening point acceptance criteria.
Blown Bitumen is a solid or semi-black solid material that gradually liquidities when heated. Oxidized asphalt grades are produced by passing air through soft bitumen under controlled temperature conditions, giving it more rubbery properties than penetration or hard grade bitumen’s. Different grades for suited applications are designated by two numbers indicating the midpoints of their softening point and penetration ranges.
RAHA GROUP is a market leader in producing, exporting, and brokerage different grades of oxidized asphalt with excellent quality. Their sales team is committed to understanding customer requirements and is available for product information or placing orders.
Uses of Blown Bitumen 90/10
Blown Bitumen 90/10, a dark industrial bitumen, is produced through the oxidation of petroleum residue by passing air through heated penetration-grade bitumen under controlled conditions. This process, conducted at optimal temperatures (typically 265-270°C), enhances the material’s properties, including durability, flexibility, water resistance, and chemical stability.
The production method requires careful monitoring of air injection, temperature, and pressure to ensure quality and safety, as excessive heat or air can lead to severe reactions or explosions. The resulting product ranges from highly viscous to solid and must be promptly transferred to drums or tankers to maintain stability.
Blown Bitumen 90/10 is widely used across industries due to its technical advantages. Applications include anti-slip layers in the piling industry, roofing felts, waterproofing, sound-dampening felts, automotive undercarriage sealants, and cable joint protection.
It is also utilized in sealing expansion joints, repairing cracks, fixing parquet floors, and thermal insulation adhesion. Furthermore, it plays a critical role in the manufacture of bituminous marine mastic for oil and gas pipeline joints, corrosion protection, and various industrial products such as paints, mastics, and pipe coatings. Its versatility and reliability make it a vital component in numerous construction and industrial processes.
Recommendations for Handling / Storage
The heating of packaged bitumen is crucial for its final uses, often in on-site boilers. Control at the heating phase is essential for health and safety, as well as product quality. The maximum safe handling temperature is 230 C, and it should not be abused. Bitumen is a poor heat conductor, so controlling the heating phase is crucial. Blown bitumen material should be broken up before placement in the boiler to expose a larger surface area to heat and promote even heating. Aggressive heating may result in localized overheating, altering the characteristics of RAHA modified bitumen and potentially causing thermal cracking and low flash vapors.
Melted bitumen should not be left in the boiler and reheated from cold, as this could lead to localized overheating and a pressurized pocket of low flash vapors. Temperature monitoring or control devices should be placed carefully, as the poor thermal conductivity of bitumen can cause thermometer readings to differ significantly from the true temperature.
Health & Safety
Workers should wear protective masks, gloves, and goggles during application. The asphalt can be removed from equipment and tools with kerosene or gasoline. Care should be taken when heating Blown Bitumen 90/10 to avoid over heating
