Oxidized Asphalt 90/15

Oxidized Asphalt 90/15

General Description of Oxidized Bitumen 90/15

Oxidized Asphalt 90/15 is among the oxidized bitumen grades that are produced through the oxidation of selected petroleum asphalt, without using any catalysts. This product is characterized by its high softening point, high flash point, and excellent stability in melting.

It is produced by air-blowing penetration-grade bitumen at high temperatures, producing a material of higher penetration index. The production process, conducted under controlled temperature conditions, gives the asphalt more rubber-like properties compared to penetration or hard-grade bitumen, making it suitable for various industrial applications.

RAHA Bitumen 90/15 is produced either by a continuous or by a staggered blowing process. Hot air is blown through 60/70 bitumen, which controls its oil content during its oxidation. The numbers 90/15 refer to the midpoint of the softening point and the penetration range according to ASTM D36 and ASTM D5 standards, respectively.

The RAHA Group is one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of oxidized asphalt. With several years of experience, their sales team is well acquainted with customer needs and strives to satisfy customers. You can contact their sales team for more information or to place your order.

Uses of Oxidized Asphalt 90/15

OXIDIZED ASPHALT 90/15 is a very versatile product. It can be used in many areas of application. The anti-slip layer in the piling industry, roofing and waterproofing systems, sound-dampening felts, and sealants for undercarriage applications in the automotive industry. Electric cable joints protection, joint filling, carpet backing, corrosion protection, acoustic panels, chemicals, fuels, paints, and sealants can also be made from it. It effectively seals saw cuts and joints with minimal movement in construction and finds application in the manufacture of bituminous marine mastic for oil and gas pipeline joints.

Bitumen oxidized also acts as expansion joints sealing material, solution to repair the cracks and joints, fixation agent of parquet floors. This acts as an adhesive for thermal insulation, bonding agent for wet briquettes, and repair material for unexposed cracks. It has uses on roofing, insulation flooring, mastics, pipe coating, and diverse electrical applications and hence plays a vital role in many processes related to industry and construction.

Technical Advantages of Oxidized Asphalt 90/15

  • Durability
  • Flexibility
  • Water Resistant
  • Chemical Stability

Compared to paving grade bitumen:

  • Reduced temperature susceptibility
  • Exhibits a more ‘solid’ nature at ambient temperatures
  • High penetration index

Recommendations for Handling / Storage

Heating packaged bitumen is a crucial step that requires careful control to ensure safety and maintain product quality. The maximum safe handling temperature of 230°C must not be exceeded, as bitumen’s poor heat conductivity makes it prone to localized overheating. Breaking up the oxidized asphalt before placing it in the boiler allows for more even heating and reduces the risk of thermal cracking and the release of low-flash vapors, which increase fire risk.

Melted bitumen should not be reheated from cold in the boiler to avoid localized overheating and potential pressurized vapor pockets. Accurate temperature monitoring is essential, as thermometers placed away from the heat source may give misleading readings due to bitumen’s poor thermal conductivity. Always refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for health and safety guidelines.

Health & Safety

Workers should wear protective masks, gloves, and goggles during application. The asphalt can be removed from equipment and tools with kerosene or gasoline. Care should be taken when heating Oxidized Asphalt 90/15 to avoid over heating

Packing of Oxidized Asphalt 90/15
