Oxidized Bitumen 85/40

Oxidized Bitumen 85/40

General Description of Oxidized Bitumen 85/40

Oxidized Bitumen 85/40, also known as Blown bitumen, is produced by blowing hot air into penetration bitumen, making it more rubbery and harder. This process recovers weight loss under heating, resulting in a higher softening point and higher penetration index (PI) than regular bitumen. This special and most usable grade in Scandinavia is based on petroleum bitumen, which is made by blowing bitumen 60/70 by very hot air.

The designation of RAHA Bitumen 85/40 refers to the midpoint of the softening point acceptance criteria. RAHA Bitumen 85/40 is produced through either continuous or staggered blowing processes, with the midpoints indicating the softening point and penetration ranges. The softening point value is measured by Ring and Ball method as determined by ASTM D36, while the penetration value is in 1/10 mm as determined by IP49 or ASTM-D5.

RAHA GROUP is a market leader in producing, exporting, and brokerage different grades of oxidized asphalt with excellent quality. Their sales team is committed to understanding customer requirements due to years of experience in supplying bitumen products. Uses of Oxidized Bitumen 85/40

Oxidized Bitumen 85/40 is a solid or semi-black solid material and gradually liquid when heated. Oxidized Bitumen grades are blown or oxidized Asphalt ‘s which are produced by passing air through soft bitumen under controlled temperature conditions. This process gives the bitumen more rubbery properties than penetration or hard grade bitumen and a variety of uses in industrial applications.

This bitumen is mostly used in industry, such as roof insulation, flooring, industrial mastic, pipe coating, and paints. Specification of Oxidized bitumen is categorized based on softening points and penetration rate. Also, Oxidized bitumen 85/40 using as raw material for bitumen coat, roofing, insulation, and isolation bitumen membrane sheet.

Advantages of Oxidized Bitumen 85/40

Oxidized bitumen 85/40 has so many features that make it so versatile and reliable in so many areas of application. This product is highly durable, water-resistant, and chemically stable; thus, its best applications would be in waterproofing, roofing, and insulation. The high softening point and flexibility ensure strong performance under different environmental conditions.

This is the grade of bitumen, which is usually used in corrosion protection, road pavement, sound insulation, expansion joints, and crack sealing. In addition, such kinds of bitumen are used as a link material in the thermal insulation and parquet floor, and in mastics, pipe wrapping, and industrial paints manufacturing. Its robust properties make it suitable for stringent industrial and construction applications.

Recommendations for Handling / Storage

Packaged bitumen is a crucial phase in most final uses, typically heated and melted in on-site boilers. Control at the heating phase is essential for health, safety, and product quality. The maximum safe handling temperature is 230 C, and it should not be abused. Bitumen is a poor heat conductor, so controlling the heating phase is crucial. Breaking up oxidized bitumen material before placement in the boiler exposes a larger surface area, promoting an even heating regime. Aggressive heating at the base and sides may result in localized overheating, altering the characteristics of the RAHA modified bitumen and potentially causing thermal cracking and low flash vapors.

Melted bitumen should not be left in the boiler and reheated from cold, as this could lead to localized overheating and a pressurized pocket of low flash vapors. Temperature monitoring or control devices should be placed carefully, as the poor thermal conductivity of bitumen can cause thermometers to read significantly different temperatures from the true temperature near the heat source.

Health & Safety

Workers should wear protective masks, gloves, and goggles during application. The asphalt can be removed from equipment and tools with kerosene or gasoline. Care should be taken when heating Oxidized Bitumen 85/40 to avoid overheating. For Health and Safety information, please make reference to the relevant MSDS.
