Bitumen Emulsion MS-2

Bitumen Emulsion MS-2

General Description of Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2

Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 is an anionic water-based emulsified asphalt with moderate viscosity and setting time containing minimum 60% bitumen designed makes it an ideal product for premixing applications. It is chocolate brown in colour and is a free-flowing liquid at ambient temperature

Asphalt emulsions are classified according to the electric charge that surrounds the emulsion’s asphalt particles (i.e. whether it is a cationic or an anionic emulsion) and how quickly the suspended asphalt particles separate from the surrounding water (“breaking”). A slow-setting emulsion is designed to maximize the mixing time with aggregates.
Longer workability times ensure a good coating on dense-graded aggregates with a high fines content. The setting speed of any emulsion is relative to atmospheric conditions at the time of construction.

Application of Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2

Chemical surface-active agents, which serve as Emulsifiers, are classified by the electrochemical charge that is attained when they dissociate in a water solution. In the case of ANIONIC EMULSIONS, the chemical charge is NEGATIVE. The chemical type and quantity of surface-active agent used in the manufacturing process governs the process in which the resulting asphalt emulsion can be used.

RECOMMENDED USE

RAHA GROUP Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 is ideally suited for

  • Pothole repair/ Patch work
  • 20mm Pre-mix Carpet

Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 is recomended for cold mix tratement

Traditionally, aggregates and bitumen are heated to a temp of 150C for construction of pavements. It is extremely important to maintain stipulated temperatures at the time of producing the mix, laying and compaction. Failure to adhere to these temperature requirements could lead to reduced durability for the pavements. There are enormous challenges to maintain these temperature requirements in

  • high rainfall areas as intermittent rain throughout the year affect production and laying of mixes
  • high attitude or snow-bound areas as mix gets solidified quickly
  • winter conditions
  • long transit distance between the hot mix plant and the project site
  • undue delay in laying the mix

These challenges lead to wide spread usage of Cold Mix technology.

  • Cold Mix allows construction in all seasons and even with wet aggregates.
  • Cold mix is made up of custom designed Cationic Bitumen Emulsions and aggregates.
  • Cold mixes can be produced with a wide variety of equipment, either on-site, with in-place pulverizers, mixer/pavers, or at central plants. Both blade- and paver-laid mixes are commonly used. Mixing and laydown equipment is essentially the same as that for hot mix production.

Cold mix when used as paving mix can offer following advantages.

  • Cold Mix eliminates heating of aggregate and binder. This results in energy savings and overall reduced cost as compared to typical hot mix
  • Environmental friendly and conserves energy.
  • It can be easily prepared using small set up on site.
  • Cold mix is particularly suited for construction of roads in remote and isolated areas of a country where plant produced hot mix may have set before reaching site.
  • Cold mix can be laid during wet or humid condition also.

Recommend rate of Application

Typical rate of application of RAHA GRUOP Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 for preparation of mix is 7% by weight of aggregates.

Packaging, Storage and Handling MS-2

  • MS-2 should be stored in bulk tanks, ideally vertical to minimize surface area
  • Do not allow MS-2 to either freeze or boil: it will break. Safe storage temperatures range from 10°C (50°F) to 85°C (185°F).
  • In bulk storage, mix the MS-2 every 1 to 2 weeks (more frequently in cold weather). Mixing may be done by paddle agitator (slow), loose gear pump, slow centrifugal pump, or another suitable low shear pump.
  • Do not bubble air through MS-2 to agitate it: this creates excessive foam and may cause the MS-2 to break
  • Always use clean storage containers. Make sure prior contents are compatible with MS-2 or the emulsion may break
  • Only use approved and sealed containers for sampling the emulsion.

Advantage of MS-2

  • No Heating required
  • cost-efficient
  • easy and uniform spray
  • low-temperature curing
  • Minimum preparation time for surface repair
  • Medium Setting Time
