Description of DEG (Diethylene Glycol)
Diethylene Glycol (DEG) is a clear, odorless liquid with the chemical formula C₄H₁₀O₃. It belongs to the diol family and is produced from ethylene glycol. DEG is completely soluble in water, alcohol, and many organic solvents, which makes it highly versatile in industrial applications.
Compared with mono ethylene glycol (MEG), DEG has a higher boiling point (around 245 °C), as well as greater viscosity and density. These properties make it suitable for use in the production of polyester resins, polyurethanes, plasticizers, brake fluids, antifreeze, and solvents.
Commercially, DEG is manufactured through the partial hydrolysis of ethylene oxide and is supplied as a stable, water-soluble liquid for use across different industries.
RAHA Oil Co. – Supplying Quality DEG for Local Industries
RAHA Oil Co. supplies Diethylene Glycol (DEG) to customers in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. With reliable logistics and consistent quality, the company supports manufacturers and traders who need a stable supply of raw materials for their production.
What is Diethylene Glycol (DEG)?
- Chemical formula: C4H10O3
- Appearance: clear, colorless liquid with low odor
- Properties: easily mixes with water and many solvents, boiling point around 245 °CMain applications include:
- Resins and plastics (polyester resins, polyurethanes, plasticizers)
- Printing inks and dyes
- Brake fluids, lubricants, and antifreeze
- Intermediate for chemical production
How DEG produced?
Production of diethylene glycol is generally based on the demand for, and production of, mono ethylene glycol as it is a by-product of this production process.
The process consists of the oxidation of ethylene at a high temperature in the presence of a silver oxide catalyst. Hydrating ethylene oxide yields diethylene glycol, along with mono ethylene glycol and tri ethylene glycol as co-products.
The chemical industry tries to maximize the production of Mono ethylene glycol in this process, but diethylene glycol is a very useful by-product.
How is it stored and distributed?
DEG can be stored in stainless steel, aluminum, or lined drums, tank cars, or tank trucks. It has a specific gravity of 1.118 and a flashpoint of 154 °C (closed cup). It is not regulated for transport on road, rail, air, or sea and is harmful if swallowed.
