Monoethanolamine

Monoethanolamine Description

MonoEthanolAmine (MEA), a clear, colorless liquid, is a vital chemical compound with various industrial applications.

It belongs to the family of ethanolamines and consists of a primary amine group (-NH2) attached to a hydroxyethyl group (-OH).

MEA is soluble in water and exhibits alkaline properties. Due to its unique chemical structure, it is utilized in diverse industries. MEA functions as a corrosion inhibitor, pH regulator, and gas sweetening agent in the oil and gas sector. In the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, it serves as a key ingredient.

Additionally, MEA is employed in the manufacture of detergents, surfactants, and as a solvent in chemical processes. Its versatility and reactivity make it an essential compound in modern industrial chemistry.

Uses of MEA

Monoethanolamine combine the properties of amines and alcohols in one molecule. They exhibit the unique capability of undergoing reactions common to both groups (bifunctioncal). As amines, they are mildly alkaline and react with acids to form salts or soaps. As alcohols they can be transformed to ethers and esters. Ethanolamines are miscible with water, most alcohols and polyols.

Most of their industrial applications are dependent to some degree on these features.

Applications include the production of wood-treatment chemicals, detergents and surfactants.

Monoethanolamine (MEA) is used as a building block, ph-control agent as well as a dilution agent.

MEA is used as a pH control agent in the formulation of packaging and printing inks.

Handling and Storage

This document provides guidelines for handling and storage of a material, emphasizing the importance of personal protective equipment, proper handling, and proper storage.

It advises workers to wash hands and face before handling the material, avoid contact with eyes, skin, or clothing, and avoid breathing vapor or mist.

If the material presents a respiratory hazard, use it with adequate ventilation or wear a respirator.

The material should be stored in its original container or an approved alternative, tightly closed when not in use, and away from acids.

Empty containers can be hazardous and should not be reused. The material should be stored between 20-40°C, following local regulations, and in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area.
